Praktik ruqyah telah dilakukan oleh umat Islam sejak zaman Nabi Muhammad saw. Namun, seiring dengan perkembangan zaman, praktik ruqyah seringkali disalahgunakan dan disalahpahami oleh masyarakat. Oleh karena itu, penting untuk memahami pengertian, dalil, dan hukumnya dalam agama Islam.
Mendengar kata ruqyah, kebanyakan orang mungkin akan tertuju pada praktik pengobatan mistis untuk menangani penyakit-penyakit nonmedis seperti kesurupan, guna-guna, santet, teluh, dan gangguan gaib lainnya. Padahal, ruqyah tidak selalu berkaitan dengan hal-hal demikian. Sebab, ruqyah juga digunakan untuk pengobatan medis.
Kalau kita coba mendefinisikan, ruqyah merupakan praktik pengobatan dengan ayat-ayat Al-Qur’an, doa-doa, atau zikir-zikir khusus untuk menyembuhkan orang yang memiliki keluhan penyakit medis ataupun nonmedis. Dalil praktik pengobatan demikian adalah firman Allah swt berikut:
وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ الْقُرْاٰنِ مَا هُوَ شِفَاۤءٌ وَّرَحْمَةٌ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِيْنَۙ وَلَا يَزِيْدُ الظّٰلِمِيْنَ اِلَّا خَسَارًا
Artinya: Kami turunkan dari Al-Qur'an (sesuatu) yang menjadi penawar dan rahmat bagi orang yang beriman, sedangkan bagi orang yang zalim (Al-Qur'an itu) hanya akan menambah kerugian (Surat Al-Isra ayat 82).
Dilansir dari NU Online, ayat ini menjelaskan bahwa salah satu manfaat Al-Qur’an bagi manusia adalah obat bagi orang-orang yang beriman. Imam Fakhruddin ar-Razi dalam tafsirnya menyampaikan, kata syifâ (penawar atau obat) pada ayat di atas menunjukkan bahwa Al-Qur’an bisa menjadi obat baik untuk penyakit rohani atau jasmani.

Lebih tegas, Ar-Razi mengatakan: Jika mayoritas filsuf dan ahli pembuat jimat saja bisa menyembuhkan dengan bacaan-bacaan selain Al-Qur’an, maka jelas Al-Qur’an lebih manjur karena sudah mendapat legalitas teologis. Rasulullah saw sendiri telah menyampaikan, Siapapun yang tidak (mencari) kesembuhan dengan Al-Qur’an, maka Allah tidak akan memberikan kesembuhan baginya (Ar-Razi, Tafsir Al-Kabir, tanpa tahun: juz XXI, halaman 34).
Tidak jauh berbeda, Imam Al-Qurthubi dalam tafsirnya menyebutkan, kata syifâ juga memiliki arti obat bagi penyakit medis dengan metode ruqyah, meminta perlindungan kepada Allah, dan semisalnya. Al-Qurthubi mendasari penjelasannya dengan hadits panjang berikut:
